The Ford Edge is a five-seat midsize crossover that began production in 2006. It has built two generations, each with an update halfway through its generation.

First Generation (2007-2014)

The first-generation Ford Edge offered four trims: SE, Sel, Limited and Sport. The Sport trim didn’t begin selling until the 2009 model year. The base SE trim had cloth seats, single-zone manual air conditioning, AM/FM stereo, with a single disc CD player, and 17-inch wheels. The SEL trim featured unique cloth seats and offered a 6-way power driver’s seat, premium AM/FM stereo, with a six-disc CD changer, leather-wrapped steering wheel with secondary audio controls, and 18-inch wheels. The Limited trim featured leather trim seats, an optional 6-way power front passenger folding-flat seat, EasyFold second-row seat back release, dual-zone temperature control, 18-inch premium chrome-clad aluminum wheels, and SYNC in-car connectivity system.

Between 2007 and 2009 Ford offered a Duratec liter V6 with 265 horsepower; and an upgraded version was available in 2011. The standard transmission was a six-speed automatic transmission.

Safety equipment includes standard dual front airbags, front side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control, electronic stability control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.

In 2009, the Sport trim had leather-trimmed seats with grey faux suede inserts, a folding 60/40 second row, six-disc CD player, chrome exhaust tips, 20-inch premium chrome-clad wheels, all body-colored trim and optional 22-inch wheels. It also included a premium AM/FM stereo and SYNC in-car connectivity system.

The Edge got a mild facelift in 2011. The exterior received a new front fascia, along with wheels and a revised bumper. The interior upgraded its materials and touch controls replaced hard buttons and switches. A Duratec 3.7-liter V6 with 305 horsepower for the Sport was added, along with an additional EcoBoost inline-four with 240 horsepower. The Limited offered optional adaptive cruise control, blind-spot information and HID headlights. The Limited seats were trimmed with charcoal black leather, and it now featured 22-inch aluminum wheels with black spokes

Second Generation (2015 – Present)

The second generation featured a standard EcoBoost 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 245 horsepower. With AWD, its tow ratings reached 3,500 pounds. A 3.5-liter V6 with 280 horsepower was also offered. Its highest-powered engine was the 2.7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 with 315 horsepower. This engine was used on the Sport models. All engines came with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available on all models. Its interior room is also increased.

In 2018 a new SEL Sport Appearance package became available, adding a number of cosmetic upgrades to the exterior and interior of the Ford Edge. Along with unique 19-inch wheels, the package provides blacked-out headlamp bezels and side window trim. The grille surround, mirror caps, rear spoiler, and skid plates have all been painted in Magnetic Metallic.

Another facelift came in the 2019 model year. Four trims were offered for this model year, starting with the base SE, SEL, Titanium and the top trim, ST. The wide-slat grill was replaced with a honeycomb grille. The headlights and taillights were redesigned to give the Edge a sleeker, more upscale appearance. The ST offered a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine with twin turbochargers and 335 horsepower. The ST featured a dark mesh front grille and a restyled interior and aluminum-alloy wheels. Each trim now offered aluminum-alloy wheels as an available option.

The 3.5-liter V6 was discontinued and Ford boosted the horsepower of the base 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine from 245 to 250. All trims now came with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Safety features were added in 2019, including post-collision braking, evasive steering assist and adaptive cruise control with lane centering for stop and go traffic. The Edge now offers nine exterior colors – dark Persian green, star white, desert gold, iconic silver, race red, burgundy velvet, atlas blue, magnetic, and agate black.

For the 2020 model year, dual-zone automatic climate control was included on all trims and the CD player was removed. Pricing ranges from $32,345 to $44,510.

On the outside, the 2021 Ford Edge remains the same since its 2019 facelift. The interior is updated from Ford’s SYNC3 to SYNC4 and brings a new 12-inch infotainment screen. It has the same powertrain options, and each trim receives new wheel designs. Two new gray colors join the color palette. All models also receive acoustic-laminated glass on the front side windows for extra sound deadening. The top-level ST model adds a six-way power-adjustable passenger seat and a heated steering wheel as standard. All-wheel drive also remains an option. All models come standard with lane-keeping assist and automated emergency braking.
