The competition between the 2020 Ford Fusion and Hyundai Sonata is fierce. Both midsize sedans stir your sense of camaraderie with spacious, comfortable seating and all the latest in-car connectivity features. And these models also supply impressive safety aids—the kind that help you avoid danger altogether. Finally, both sedans are smooth and powerful. So how can you choose just one? Jarrett Scott Ford’s comparison guide takes a closer look at each model. We’ll help you come to the right conclusion!
Premium Comfort: 2020 Ford Fusion
For a dose of daily opulence, choose the Fusion. Ford’s midsize sedan is roomy and quiet, two things any driver can appreciate. As you climb the trim levels, you’ll find more and more in high-end cabin materials and upscale comforts—think leather upholstery and heated seats.
Inside the Sonata, you’ll find generous passenger space and supportive seating. However, one of the Sonata’s drawbacks is that, even inside top trim models, it’s not quite as luxurious as rival sedans.
Tech Features: It’s a Tie!
We’re big fans of both sedans’ smart safety features and intuitive infotainment systems. The Ford Fusion and Hyundai Sonata both offer the latest and greatest in crash-prevention technology, such as blind-spot monitoring and forward collision mitigation. Better yet, these features come at no extra cost.
Both automakers’ infotainment systems include full smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This handy technology puts apps at your fingertips, displaying them on each model’s respective touch screen. And, speaking of touch screens, both sedans make a point of delivering quick-responding, easy-to-figure out infotainment technology.
Sportiest Drive: 2020 Ford Fusion
Both of these midsize sedans can get up to speed in a jiffy, but the Fusion ultimately offers more horsepower. To achieve top speeds in the Fusion, you need the optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which zooms around with 240 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque.
The 2020 Sonata gets a modest power bump this year, but it’s not enough to beat the Fusion in a race. Its new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine generates 191 horses and 181 pound-feet of torque—pretty impressive. (For 2021, the Sonata N-Line will offer a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 290 horses and 310 pound-feet of torque. But, until then, the Fusion maintains its edge in this category.)
Longest-Lived Warranty Coverage: 2020 Hyundai Sonata
Hyundai’s warranty coverage is some of the greatest out there, including a very long-lived limited powertrain warranty. Hyundai promises to keep your Sonata’s engine chugging along for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. New vehicle coverage is also impressive, lasting five years or 60,000 miles.
Ford’s warranty coverage also protects you if something should go wrong, though it doesn’t last quite as long. Your Fusion enjoys limited powertrain coverage for five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. The new vehicle coverage lasts five years or 36,000 miles.
The Verdict
As midsize sedans go, the 2020 Ford Fusion is the total package. Whether you’re cruising with your family or commuting to work, Ford’s modern sedan keeps everyone comfy and connected. Of course, the Hyundai Sonata isn’t without its finer points, including an impressive standard tech lineup and a ton of warranty coverage.
