Are you deciding between the 2020 Ford Edge and Chevrolet Trax? These modern crossovers have so many features in common that you might have trouble telling them apart. But Jarrett Scott Ford’s comparison guide is here for you.
Plush Modern Comfort: 2020 Ford Edge
The midsize Edge is naturally roomier than the compact Trax. Even in the midsize segment, though, the Edge has one of the most spacious cabins. This crossover is also known for its especially plush seating, with cushions that generate hours of support. If you’re looking for a seriously comfortable ride for up to five passengers, the Edge certainly delivers.
Though the Chevrolet Trax cabin doesn’t offer quite as much space, it does provide supportive seat cushions. And, like the Edge, its various trim models provide increasing levels of luxury. However, the Trax never gets quite as luxurious, with faux-leather upholstery in top trim models (the Edge offers real leather upholstery) and plasticky interior touch points.
Tech and Safety Gear: 2020 Ford Edge
Both the Edge and the Trax will spark your interest with their attractive infotainment systems. Both come standard with touch-screen interfaces (8 inches in the Edge and 7 inches in the Trax). And both include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, smartphone integration technology that gives you hands-free access to apps, creating a safer driving environment.
Speaking of safety, though, only the Edge comes standard with a long list of high-tech driver aids. Features like blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking help you avoid costly damages. Similar features are optional for the Trax, but you do have to pay extra to get them.
Sporty Powertrain Options: 2020 Ford Edge
In a race, the Edge will get to the finish line first. Ford’s midsize crossover offers two turbocharged engine options, both of which impress with their peppy performance. The base engine is a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder (250 horsepower, 275 pound-feet of torque) that’s known for its quick acceleration. The Edge ST features an exclusive engine, a twin-turbo 2.7-liter V6 (335 horses, 380 pound-feet) for an even sportier ride.
Every Chevy Trax, on the other hand, features the same powertrain. A turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine (138 horses, 148 pound-feet) does a decent job of getting you up to speed. However, you won’t find a Trax that’s as quick as the Edge happens to be.
Commute-Friendly Mileage: 2020 Chevrolet Trax
Compared to the Edge, the Trax gets a few extra miles to the gallon. With front-wheel drive, the Trax earns 28 mpg combined (26 city/31 highway mpg). The all-wheel drive system, because of its extra weight, reduces efficiency slightly. All-wheel-drive Trax models are EPA rated for 26 mpg combined (24/29 mpg).
As the bigger, more powerful crossover, the Edge doesn’t get quite as good mileage. But it still strikes a friendly balance between horsepower and efficiency, earning up to 24 mpg combined (21/29 mpg) with its base engine.
The Verdict
The 2020 Chevrolet Trax will save you some cash at the pump—especially if you’ve got a long highway commute—but it’s the 2020 Ford Edge that has us all starry eyed. With its sporty performance, modern safety gear, and roomy, versatile cabin, the 2020 Ford Edge is an all-around winner.
